Prince George's does dry run for snow and ice

FORESTVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County is running its annual snow and ice practice run, BEFORE we actually get some winter weather.

Friday, we caught up with Public Works crew members at their starting point in Forestville.

The new acting director of the department, Daryl Mobley, talked to us about the annual dry run so crews can practice, gear up and test equipment.

"What's going to happen today is we'll have about 400 employees out driving the roadways, testing their equipment, making sure that the plows are operational, making sure the salt spreaders are working properly and also we're checking -- testing our AVL system, our automated vehicle load system. The Prince George's County Department of Public Works and Transportation wants to be prepared for any weather event that will occur," said Mobley.

It Takes Two is theme of teen driver safety initiative

(WUSA9) -- The third week of October is National Teen Driver Safety Week and we're  kicking off the "Extra Mile" week-long series about the initiative with John Kuo, Administrator of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

The theme this year is "It Takes Two: shared expectations for teens and parents." The State of Maryland is recognizing the program with this driver safety tips card. Kuo told us what was on this card and what parents can do to support their teens when they are driving.

"Besides putting on the seat belt, don't text and drive, don't use the handheld cell phone while you are driving, try to restrict passengers as well. Studies have shown that teens that carry young passengers with them, it causes them to be distracted, causes them to not focus on their driving," stated Kuo.

Cancellation of Soccer and Football games in PG Co.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY (WUSA9) -- PG County School officials said that due to the condition of the soccer/football fields, all soccer and football games scheduled for tonight and tomorrow have been canceled.

They believe the fields are not safe for competition. Varsity football will have to be re-scheduled for Monday.

WUSA9 to try drone camera

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Phantom is one of a handful of radio controlled rotor aircraft designed to act as miniature flying camera platforms.

WUSA has experimented, with limited success, other popular models. One model we tried flew well as long as there was no wind-but the method for downloading the video was not simple enough for our workflow-which always requires speed, reliability and ease of use.

The Phantom is a quad motor, rotor type aircraft that has a GoPro camera slung underneath for shooting video and still pictures. The GoPro is usually tough and reliable so it makes a nice choice for shooting aerial footage this way.
